The latest TrainingPeaks Virtual update, v0.4.17, released March 17th, adds coach-specific functionality, better mini-map, and more graphics.
Editor’s note: Since early June 2023, we’ve highlighted the rapid evolution of indieVelo with weekly update posts. Not everyone receives the emails or is a member of the various social media groups, and the more searchable mentions available, the better to promote the indieVelo, err, Training Peaks Virtual vision. The name is different, and the once-a-week cadence might change, but the commitment to promoting the platform hasn’t wavered.
A Note From the George Gilbert, TrainingPeaks Virtual Founder: |
TrainingPeaks Virtual is continuing to deliver the online cycling experiences that committed athletes want and need. In a little over four months since launching, we have implemented over 200 of your suggestions on how to make your sport even better.
From brand new, unique, and innovative features such as heart rate-based workouts where TrainingPeaks Virtual will automatically and continually adjust the resistance to keep your heart rate in the desired range, through to quality-of-life improvements such as Focus Mode, which enables riders to turn off all distractions and just concentrate on their workouts and data, we are fully committed to providing you the software and experiences you need to achieve your goals.
This week’s release (see below for details) brings more of the features you’ve requested. Headlining is the ability for coaches to log into TrainingPeaks Virtual using their TrainingPeaks Coach username and password. This is perfect for coaches who don’t have an athlete account of their own and enables the creation of group rides, group workouts, and the coaching of athletes through spectating and messaging without needing to create a separate account.
Over the coming weeks and months ahead, we will continue to expand this area to include more coach specific information, dashboards and other features to enable coaches to better help their athletes.

In Episode 58 of the Virtual Velo Podcast, Chris and Emma welcome Dirk Friel, co-founder and Chief Evangelist of Training Peaks, and Dr. George Gilbert, the creator of indieVelo, to discuss their newly formed partnership and the launch of Training Peaks Virtual.
As usual, there is a wide range of other additions, improvements, and fixes. These include a significant upgrade to compatibility with workouts created by other applications and continued development of the graphics, including a new full-color mini-map and better terrain features for a more interesting and varied environment to ride through.
There are also numerous changes to the new Hub mobile app as we continue to roll out the closed beta ahead of a full public launch in the next few weeks.
